Songs of the Jewish-American Jet Set: The Tikva Records Story 1950-1973

Songs of the Jewish-American Jet Set: The Tikva Records Story 1950-1973 Review

Songs of the Jewish-American Jet Set is a proud collection of the
dizzying catalog of Tikva Records, the flagship independent Jewish
record label of 20th century America.
Founded in 1947, Tikva s catalog was wide-ranging everything
from Israeli folk songs to Jewish-American swing, from klezmer pop
to cantorial singing, from Catskills comedy to key political speeches
of Jewish leaders and it became something of a Jewish Motown,
home to the Jewish music world s biggest names. Despite the fact
that Tikva s releases were a direct reflection of the major social
themes and cultural shifts of Jewish America in the 50s and 60s,
its contributions to American popular music, and Jewish musical and
cultural history, have been largely forgotten.

Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan

Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Review

Two iconic forces that have impacted the past 50 years -- the life-saving human rights activism of Nobel Peace Prize-winning Amnesty International and the incomparable artistry of Bob Dylan -- are being saluted by musicians who contributed new or previously unreleased recordings to Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International. All of the artists, session musicians, arrangers, engineers, producers and recording studios worked pro-bono to support the human rights cause. Almost 30 tracks on the album were mixed gratis by famed engineer Bob Clearmountain. Bob Ludwig and Adam Ayan of Gateway Mastering donated their mastering services. The album cover illustration is by Grammy Award winning artist Mick Haggerty. Eight tracks were produced or executive produced by Martin Lewis, who as co-creator/producer in the 1970s of Amnesty's ongoing "Secret Policeman's Ball" benefit series, instigated Amnesty's outreach to rock musicians by recruiting and producing Pete Townshend, Sting, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Bob Geldof and others. Executive Producers for Amnesty International are Helen Garrett, director of special projects, and Karen Scott, manager of music relations.

For Led Zeppelin fanatics, this 1976 feature The Song Remains the Same is a treasure of searing live performances, particularly welcome in light of the sad scarcity of such visual material from the band's great decade. Despite the group's road weariness after a long tour, their final, three-night stand at Madison Square Garden in 1973 was full of the old power. Performances of "No Quarter," "Whole Lotta Love," "Black Dog," "Dazed and Confused," and "Stairway to Heaven" underscore Zep's charisma. Trouble is, you don't get an unbroken performance here. Viewers have to wade through a mishmash of documentary insight into the lives of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, as well as fantasy sequences supposedly inspired by the thoughts and fantasies of the band's individual members. It's mostly garish and silly, but there are some nice elements, especially insights into the late Bonham's life. The DVD doesn't offer much in the way of add-ons (a theatrical trailer is about it), but there is also enhanced viewing for 16 x 9 televisions. --Tom Keogh The line forms here for the world’s greatest and possibly most influential band – Led Zeppelin! Songs That Got Us Through WWII

Songs That Got Us Through WWII Review

They may have rationed meat, milk, canned goods, and gasoline, but there was no limit to the musical talent during World War II. Morale-boosting sounds on the home front and "over there" were one of the Allies' most potent weapons. WWII gave birth to many of the 1940s' most popular artists and songs, as well as many of the most important independent record labels. Songs That Got Us Through WWII is the first of a two-volume series collecting the hits that kept the home fires burning and brought a little bit of America to the G.I.s overseas. Compiled and developed by singer/songwriter/music historian Billy Vera, Vol. 1 features many of the era's biggest artists, including The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Harry James, and many more.

Hawaii Five-O: Original Songs From The Television Series

Hawaii Five-O: Original Songs From The Television Series Review

CBS Records will release a specially-produced soundtrack for the hit television series Hawaii Five-0 on Tuesday, October 4. Hawaii Five-0: Original Songs From The Television Series features brand new and previously unreleased tracks from some of music s most popular artists including Bob Dylan, Train, Goo Goo Dolls, The Swell Season, Switchfoot, Jimmy Cliff, Ziggy Marley and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro that are available exclusively on this soundtrack.

Hawaii Five-0 producers listened to dozens of submitted tracks before choosing the ones best suited for this season s upcoming storylines. Hawaii Five-0: Original Songs From The Television Series stands apart from TV soundtracks which merely compile a selection of songs that were heard in a series previous episodes. Instead, as a result of this creative process, this collection features mostly brand-new and previously unreleased tracks that will be integrated into upcoming episodes this season.

Of particular note from this collection is a previously-unreleased Bob Dylan track, “Don’t Ever Take Yourself Away.” This island-flavored gem dates from recording sessions in the early 1980s, and was newly mixed and mastered for this soundtrack after being locked in the vaults for nearly 30 years.

As Hawaii Five-0 Executive Producer Peter Lenkov explains, “Music plays a big role in our show, and we are thrilled that so many great artists have provided us with exclusive tracks that can be so well integrated into our second season episodes. As a result, fans will be able to experience a soundtrack album that is truly representative of Hawaii Five-0.”

The soundtrack also includes the first commercial release of the “Hawaii Five-0 Main Title Theme” that was newly recorded for the series launch in 2010. Also featured is a suite of the show s score, “Book em Danno” produced and arranged by Brian Tyler and Keith Power, which they assembled specifically for this album. Songs featured in the show s first season -- “Closer” from Corinne Bailey Rae and Hawaiian standard “Hi Ilawe” from John Cruz are also included.

Hawaii Five-0 airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. The show is a contemporary take on the classic series about a new, elite federalized task force whose mission is to wipe out the crime that washes up on the islands sun-drenched beaches. Nearly 12 million people watch Hawaii Five-0 on CBS each week, making it one of the most popular television shows in the country.
